娘娘腔, born 1961: 娘娘腔's relationship with her beautiful and volatile mother is difficult, 甚至是危险, but her life is also filled with beautiful things, including a new Christmas present, 一个叫埃塞尔的娃娃, who whipspers advice and kindness in 娘娘腔's ear.

莉莲, born 1925: Born in her ancestral lands in a time of terrible change, Lillian clings to her sister, 布兰奇, 还有她的洋娃娃, 美. The sisters are forced to attend an 'Indian boarding school' far from their home. When tragedy strikes the sisters, the doll 美 finds her way to defend the girls.

科拉, born 1888: Though she was born into the brutal legacy of the 'Indian Wars,' 科拉 isn't afraid of the white men who remove her to a school across the country to be 'civilized.'
